Sitting on a hospital bed in Gaza, 11-year-old Sham Rumman can’t hold back her tears as she recounts how she lost her leg after getting severely injured in an Israeli strike near her home in Gaza. “Iwant a leg. I want them to give me a new leg. I want them to give me new toes, and to remove what’s on my arm so I can go back to how I used to be,” she says.
Sham is one of thousands of Palestinian children who have lost a limb due to relentless Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip since October 2023.
Rights groups and NGOs say the war on Gaza has had a devastating effect on the children of the enclave, with an average of 15 children per day acquiring potentially life-altering disabilities.
