Born around 890 BC in Abel-meholah (modern-day Jordan Valley), he was working as a wealthy farmer when Elijah anointed him as his student and assistant. Elisha served Elijah faithfully until his master was taken to heaven, inheriting a "double portion" of Elijah's prophetic spirit around 852 BC. For over five decades, Elisha advised multiple kings of Israel, healed the sick, and guided the people through wars and famines. He is famous for performing numerous astonishing miracles through God's power, including parting the Jordan River, multiplying a poor widow's jars of oil, purifying a poisoned water spring, and curing the Syrian general Naaman of leprosy.
