Wine is the most common alcoholic beverage mentioned in biblical literature.
According to biblical texts, wine, Non-grape wine, and beer played an important part in the daily life of the inhabitants of ancient Israel. On the other hand, many biblical verses forbid the excessive consumption of wine (leading to 'drunkeness'), and a few verses, even forbid it outright.
The table below lists 75 biblical verses which at the very least, cast doubt on the permissibility of consuming wine and alcohol.
1. Noah became drunk; the result
was immorality and family trouble
Noah began to be a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard. He drank of the wine and
became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers outside.
2. Lot was so drunk he did not

4. The Nazarites were told to eat or

not drink any juice of grapes or eat grapes, fresh or dried.

23. Alcoholic drinks bite like a
serpent, sting like an adder
At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
24. Alcohol causes the drinker to
have strange and adulterous thoughts, produces
willfulness, and prevents reformation
Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.
25. Alcohol makes the drinker
unstable
Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
26. Alcohol makes the drinker
insensitive to pain so he does not perceive it as a
warning. Alcohol is habit forming
They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
27. Kings, Princes, and others who
rule and judge must not drink alcohol. Alcohol perverts good judgment
It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.
28. Strong drink could be given to
those about to perish or those in pain. Better
anesthetics are available today
Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.
29. The king tried everything,
including intoxicating drink, to see if it satisfied. It did not

drunken man staggereth in his vomit.

35. Drinkers cannot escape the
consequences when God judges

not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.
36. God pronounces woe on the
drunkards of Ephraim
Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!
37. Proud drunkards shall be trodden
down
The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet:
38. Priests and prophets stagger and
reel from beer and wine, err in vision, and stumble
in judgment
But they also have
erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.
39. Drinkers' tables are covered with
vomit and filth
For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.
40. Drinkers seek their own gain and
expect tomorrow to be just like today
Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.
41. The Rechabites drank no
grape juice or intoxicating wine and were blessed
And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups, and I said unto them, Drink ye wine. But they said,
We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever:
42. Again God instructed the priests
not to drink wine
Neither shall any priest drink wine, when they enter into the inner court.
43. Daniel refused the king's
intoxicating wine and was blessed for it along with his
abstaining friends

destroyed by God
For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

unprepared for his Lord's return
But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and
drink with the drunken; The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
60. John the Baptist drank neither grape
juice nor wine
For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink

the church are to be temperate and not addicted to
