Heifer is a young cow, over one year old, that has not borne a calf. Red heifers were slaughtered as sacrifices in the Jewish Temple and the ashes were used in purification rituals, especially for people who had become impure through contact with dead bodies.The extreme rarity of the animal, combined with the detailed ritual in which it is used, have given the red heifer special status in Jewish tradition.
Evidence for Red Heifer
Moses ben Maimon (1135-1204 AD), or Maimonides, or Rambam, was a medieval Sephardic Jewish philosopher who became one of the most prolific and influential Torah scholars of the Middle Ages. During his life, Maimonides was a rabbi, astronomer, physician and philosopher.In his Mishna commentary, Maimonides wrote:
..and the 10th red heifer will be accomplished by the king, the Messiah; may he be revealed speedily, Amen, May it be God's will.

Some Fundamentalist Christians believe that the Second Coming of Jesus Christ cannot occur until the Third Temple is constructed in Jerusalem, which requires the appearance of a red heifer born in Israel.
