Shock is rippling through the Gaza Strip over the sudden death of former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi. It is as though Palestinians have lost a leader, one who paid attention to them and aided them. Many considered him morally responsible for this geographical area adjacent to Egypt, and thatresponsibility translated into practical, positive political changes.
Palestinians in Gaza feel that Morsi repeatedly paid a price for his political and moral positions in favour of them, despite a presidency that lasted less than a year. They feel indebted to him for calling for the lifting of the unjust Israeli siege. And his words were not just words:Â Morsi ordered Egyptian authorities to permanently open the Rafah crossing, the gateway for Palestinians in Gaza to the outside world.

Who is Morsi?
Mohamed Morsi (1951-2019), PhD, was an Egyptian politician and engineer who served as the 5th President of Egypt, from 30 June 2012 to 3 July 2013. An Islamist affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood organisation, he led the Freedom and Justice Party from 2011 to 2012. In June 2013, protests calling for Morsi's resignation erupted. The military, backed by the political opposition and leading religious figures, stepped in and deposed Morsi in a coup. Pro-Morsi demonstrations were crushed, resulting in over 800 deaths. Egyptian prosecutors then charged Morsi with various crimes and sought the death penalty, a move denounced by Amnesty International as "a charade based on null and void procedures". His death sentence was overturned in November 2016 and a re-trial ordered. Morsi died during trial on 17 June 2019. |
