The concept of the Messiah is rooted in the Hebrew scriptures, the Jewish Bible – it was not invented by Christianity. For anyone to be considered the Messiah, that person must fulfill ALL of the criteria established in the Hebrew Bible.

In this session Rabbi Michael Skobac will describe the Biblical concept of the Messiah and why it is clearly self-evident that Jesus did not line up with the scriptural template.

Rabbi Skobac will also cross-examine the two elements of the Christian defense for Jesus and see why they come up short.

How should Jews respond to challenges from Christian friends, neighbours, business associates, or online articles and videos?

In this four-part video lecture series Rabbi Skobac will focus on the basic concepts in the Jewish-Christian debate.

The purpose of the series is for Jews to grow confident in their commitment to Judaism and not feel intimidated by those Christian Missionaries seeking to undermine their faith, even if those missionaries call themselves “Messianic Jews” or “Jews for Jesus”.

• THESE ARE THE THREE OTHER LECTURES IN THIS SERIES:

Session 2 • WHO IS G-D? Christianity’s Serious Error
Believing that someone is the Messiah when they aren’t is an error, but not a massive sin. Worshipping a human being as God is considered idolatry – just about the most serious sin in the Bible. This lecture will explore how Christianity came to deify Jesus and why it is such a seriously problematic belief to maintain.

Session 3 • WHO IS A HUMAN BEING? Dealing with Our Imperfection
When Jesus died without fulfilling the Messianic vision of the Hebrew scriptures, the church had to construct a new understanding of the Messiah that could accommodate someone who was executed by crucifixion. This novel Messianic concept is based on a radically different understanding of human beings than what is found in the Hebrew Bible. This program will discuss and analyze the development of these ideas.

Session 4 • WHO HAS TRUTH? Competing Claims for Scriptural Credibility
Christian missionaries insist that their beliefs and doctrines are derived from the Hebrew scriptures, and that even their so-called New Testament is consistent with the Jewish Bible. In this lecture, we will discuss why Christianity and its teachings are not consistent with the revelation that the Jewish people received at Mt. Sinai 3300 years ago.

What is Jews?

Judaism encompasses the religion, philosophy, culture and way of life of the Jewish people. Judaism is a monotheistic religion, with the Torah as its foundational text (part of the larger text known as the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible), and supplemental oral tradition represented by later texts such as the Midrash and the Talmud. Judaism is considered by religious Jews to be the expression of the covenantal relationship that God established with the Children of Israel.

Judaism includes a wide corpus of texts, practices, theological positions, and forms of organization. Within Judaism there are a variety of movements, most of which emerged from Rabbinic Judaism, which holds that God revealed his laws and commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai in the form of both the Written and Oral Torah.

The Jews are an ethnoreligious group and include those born Jewish and converts to Judaism. In 2012, the world Jewish population was estimated at about 14 million, or roughly 0.2% of

the total world population. About 42% of all Jews reside in Israel and about 42% reside in the United States and Canada, with most of the remainder living in Europe.
