5,000 Greek manuscripts of the New Testament sounds like overwhelming evidence. But when you look at when those manuscripts actually date from, a

different picture appears: almost nothing survives from before the 3rd century, and nothing at all from the 1st.

I grew up in a tradition that put enormous weight on "the original" New Testament. The idea sounds historical, as if we could recover the original words with careful enough scholarship. In this video I look at the chart of manuscripts by century, the earliest fragments (P52 and P46), and why textual critics have largely shifted from chasing the "original" to reconstructing the earliest recoverable text. Then I ask a harder question: if the original is unrecoverable, and we couldn't recognize it even if we found it, what kind of thing is it? I'd argue it's not a historical object. It's an object of faith.

What is New Testament?
The New Testament is the second part of the Christian biblical canon. The first part being the Old Testament, based on the Hebrew Bible. The New Testament discusses the teachings and person of Jesus, as well as events in first-century Christianity. Christians regard both the Old and New Testaments together as sacred scripture. The New Testament (in whole or in part) has frequently accompanied the spread of Christianity around the world. It reflects and serves as a source for Christian theology and morality.
