Overview & Key Concepts

What is Circumcision?

Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin from the human penis. Topical or locally injected anesthesia is sometimes used to reduce pain and

physiologic stress. For adults and children, general anesthesia is an option, and the procedure may be performed without a specialized circumcision device. The procedure is most often an elective surgery performed on babies and children, for religious or cultural reasons.

Who is Abu Layth?

Mufti Abu Layth carried out preliminary Arabic and Islamic Studies as a teenager in the UK in 1997. He went onto study Islam in Damascus, Syria. Abu

Layth presents traditional Islam on a contemporary platform.

What is Islam?

Early Islam or the history of Islam is believed, by most historians to have originated with Muhammad's mission in Mecca and Medina at the start of the

7th century CE. Although Muslims regard this time as a return to the original faith passed down by the Abrahamic prophets, such as Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon, and Jesus, with the submission (Islam) to the will of God. According to the traditional account, the Islamic prophet Muhammad began receiving what Muslims consider to be divine revelations in 610 CE, calling for submission to the one God, preparation for the imminent Last Judgement, and charity for the poor and needy.

What is FGM?

Female genital mutilation (FGM), or female circumcision, is the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. The

practice is found in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and within communities from countries in which FGM is common. UNICEF estimated in 2016 that 200 million women living today in 30 countries: 27 African countries, Indonesia, Iraqi Kurdistan and Yemen have undergone the procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.Why was male circumcision so important?

According to Genesis 17:9-14, God established male circumcision as an everlasting token of the divine covenant with Abraham and his descendants, decreeing that any uncircumcised male soul would be completely cut off from his people for breaking the covenant. Because Jesus and all his original disciples were circumcised, this commandment is a serious matter.

2.What was Apostle Paul's view on circumcision?

Paul considered the physical act of circumcision to be unimportant, prioritizing faith and adherence to God's commandments as more significant than the physical ritual.
