The Mysterious Dead Sea Scrolls Who wrote them and why were they hidden – with Rabbi Michael Skobac The Dead Sea Scrolls are among the most

remarkable archaeological discoveries ever made—but who wrote them, why were they hidden, and what can they teach us about ancient Jewish history?

In 1947, a Bedouin shepherd discovered ancient scrolls in a cave near Qumran, close to the Dead Sea. Further discoveries in nearby caves revealed a remarkable collection of manuscripts that transformed our understanding of Jewish life during the Second Temple period.

In this fascinating presentation, Rabbi Michael Skobac explores the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the questions surrounding their origins, and their significance for understanding the history and religious world of ancient Judaism.

In this presentation, you’ll explore:
• How the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in 1947.
• What the Qumran caves revealed about ancient Jewish life.
• Who may have written the scrolls and why they were hidden.
• What these manuscripts contribute to our understanding of the Second Temple period.
• Why the discovery remains so important to historians and biblical scholars.

What is Dead Sea Scrolls?
Dead Sea Scrolls (also Qumran Caves Scrolls) are ancient Jewish religious, mostly Hebrew, manuscripts. They were found in the Qumran Caves in the West Bank near the Dead Sea. Many thousands of written fragments have been discovered in the Dead Sea area. They represent the remnants of larger manuscripts damaged by natural causes or through human interference, with the vast majority only holding small scraps of text. However, a small number of well-preserved, almost intact manuscripts have survived - fewer than a dozen among those from the Qumran Caves.
