Youtube Description

Does the Bible contain references or prophecies that Muslims understand as pointing to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ? In this presentation, Dr. Ali Ataie

examines a number of biblical passages that have played an important role in Muslim-Christian dialogue and asks how they should be understood in their original linguistic, historical, and theological contexts.

Drawing on his background in biblical studies, Hebrew, Greek, Arabic, comparative theology, and Qur’anic studies, Dr. Ataie explores passages from both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament that Muslim scholars have associated with the coming of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Rather than relying only on English translations, he considers the wording of the original languages and the interpretive traditions surrounding these texts.

The discussion raises broader questions about biblical prophecy, the nature of revelation, the continuity of the prophetic tradition, and the relationship between the Bible and the Qur’an. It also examines how Jewish, Christian, and Muslim readers can approach the same passages in very different ways depending on their theological assumptions and methods of interpretation.

Among the themes explored are the biblical expectation of future prophetic figures, the meaning of particular titles and descriptions, and the long history of Muslim engagement with Jewish and Christian scripture. Whether one agrees with these interpretations or not, the presentation offers an opportunity to look closely at the textual arguments that have shaped this important area of interfaith discussion.
