In Quran 27:18, the story of Prophet Sulayman (or Solomon_ and the “naml” is often read literally as ants speaking, but Dr. Shabir Ally explains that the verse can be understood more flexibly. The

Arabic word 'naml' most naturally refers to ants, though some interpreters have suggested it could mean a people or tribe. Rather than insisting on a literal conversation in human language, the Quran may be dramatizing the scene, rendering the ants’ instinctive communication in eloquent Arabic for listeners to reflect upon. This aligns with how the Quran retells past events, not as verbatim transcripts, but as powerful, concise narratives meant to draw out moral and spiritual lessons. Ultimately, “ant” remains the most natural translation, but the emphasis is on understanding the verse as a meaningful dramatization rather than a strict literal report.
