Hagar isn’t mentioned at all by name in the #Quran. She’s only referred to in one place in the Quran indirectly, when Abraham prays for his familywhen he leaves them in the valley. Her story is described in great detail in the #Bible, so it serves as a natural starting point for the discussion. Dr. Shabir Ally shows that similarities and differences between the Biblical and Quranic references to Hagar. While the Quran doesn’t mention Hagar much, she has a respected place in other Islamic sources. Dr. Shabir explains that she isn’t referred to as a concubine in the most authentic sources. Her actions (running back and forth between two hills) is commemorated to this day during the #hajj (pilgrimage).

Who is Shabir Ally?Shabir Ally is a Canadian Muslim preacher who serves as the president of the Islamic Information & Dawah Centre International in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Who was Hagar?According to the Book of Genesis, Hagar is an Egyptian slave, a hand-maiden of Sarah, whom Sarah gave to her own husband Abram (later renamed Abraham) as a wife to bear him a child. Abraham's firstborn son through Hagar, Ishmael, became the progenitor of the Ishmaelites, generally taken to be the Arabs. Various commentators have connected her to the Hagrites (sons of Agar), perhaps claiming her as their eponymous ancestor. Hagar is alluded to, although not named, in the Quran, and Islam considers her Abraham's second wife.
