How did a small group in Medina become a world power?
In this deep-dive episode of MythVision, historian Dr. James Howard-Johnston (Oxford) reveals a powerful and often overlooked connection:
👉 The
rise of Islam happened during one of the most devastating conflicts in history — the Roman–Persian War (602–628 AD).
At the same time:
- Empires were collapsing
- Plague was spreading
- Jerusalem was conquered and reclaimed
- And apocalyptic expectations were rising
⚠️ Then something unexpected happened…
A new movement emerged in Arabia — and within decades, it reshaped the world.
💡 According to Dr. Johnston, the key to understanding this explosion may be hidden in one place:
👉 The Quran itself
In this video, we explore:
- The war between Byzantium and Persia
- Emperor Heraclius and the recovery of the True Cross
- The political and religious chaos of the 7th century
- The early expansion of Islam
- And the “secret” behind its rapid success
🔥 This isn’t just history… this is the context that changed civilization.

Early Islam or the history of Islam is believed, by most historians to have originated with Muhammad's mission in Mecca and Medina at the start of the 7th century CE. Although Muslims regard this time as a return to the original faith passed down by the Abrahamic prophets, such as Adam, Noah
Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon, and Jesus, with the submission (Islam) to the will of God.
