Akkadian (Iran/Iraq) Worship of Sin the Moon God | Atum

The worship of the moon in ancient Mesopotamia was one of the earliest aspects of Mesopotamian religion. Known as Nanna in Sumerian and Sin in Akkadian, the moon god was worshipped across different Mesopotamian cultures, from the Sumerians to the Babylonians and Assyrians. This devotion reflects the moon’s vital role in these societies, which relied on its cycles to track time and guide agricultural activities.
Nanna or Sin was considered the son of Enlil, the god of air and storms, and Ninlil, a goddess associated with the earth. He was also the father of major deities like Utu (or Shamash), the sun god, and Inanna (or Ishtar), the goddess of love and war. This family connection reflects the intricate interplay between day and night, love, wisdom, and cosmic order in Mesopotamian beliefs.
