Book 18 in Dr. Shabir Ally's Ramadan 2021 series, 30 Life-Changing Books:
The Evidence for Jesus by James D. G. Dunn
Dr. Shabir Ally explains that this book of New Testament scholarship is a response to book 17 (Ian Wilson's book). While Wilson was a historian, Dunn is a known biblical scholar. Dr. Ally argues that it is important to read both books. He says that Muslims must understand from scholars in the field what is a capable defense of the beliefs of another faith.
He highlights some important features of Dunn's work. Dunn shows the drastic difference in the presentation of Jesus in Matthew, Mark and Luke compared to John. For example, in John, Jesus speaks in long, prosaic statements compared to the other gospels, where he speaks in a short, pithy manner. Dunn says that to get to the real Jesus, one needs to look at the synoptic gospels. But even in these gospels, there are developments. He also discusses the myth of Christian beginnings, arguing that Christianity had divergent beliefs right from its inception. Finally, in contrast to Wilson, Dunn argues that Jesus claims the unique title of Son of God.
