By Dr. Ahmad Mohammad Ali al-Jamal The Syriacs, a Semitic people historically identified as Arameans, trace their ancestry to Aram, son of Shem and grandson of Noah (peace be upon him). Their homeland corresponded to the regions described in the Torah as Aram, covering much of what is today theLevant and Iraq. The Syriac language, which emerged during the Christian era, developed as a continuation of Aramaic. In its early usage it was still known as Aramaic, and its speakers were referred to as Arameans [1].
It is a misconception to regard the Syriac language as merely a dialect of Aramaic, as some Orientalists have claimed. Syriac is, in fact, identical to the Aramaic language that had already achieved historical prominence centuries before the Christian era. A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, Syria is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including Syrian Arabs, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians, Mandeans and Turkemens. Religious groups include Sunnis, Christians, Alawites, Druze, Isma'ilis, Mandeans, Shiites, Salafis, Yazidis, and Jews. Sunnis make up the largest religious group in Syria.
