Aaron performs the rituals for the Day of Atonement and the scapegoat

Leviticus 16:8-10
Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats; one lot for Yahweh, and the other lot for the scapegoat. Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for Yahweh, and offer him for a sin offering. But the goat on which the lot fell for the scapegoat shall be presented alive before Yahweh, to make atonement for him, to send him away as the scapegoat into the wilderness.

What is Atonement?
Atonement (also atoning, to atone) is the concept of a person taking action to correct previous wrongdoing on their part. This is through direct action to undo the consequences of that act, equivalent action to do good for others, or some other expression of feelings of remorse. Atonement 'is closely associated to forgiveness, reconciliation, sorrow, remorse, repentance, reparation, and guilt'. It can be seen as a necessary step on a path to redemption.
