Melissa: 'The homeless are people too. We just trying to live' | Invisible People

Youtube Description:
We met Melissa on a cold, rainy day in Seattle, camped out with the man she loves.
You'd think on a day like that, she'd want to be inside a shelter. But here's the problem: most shelters separate couples. And who wants to be separated from the person they trust, the person who keeps them warm at night, the person who has their back? So instead, Melissa and her partner stay together outside, in the rain, rather than split up to get a bed.
This is the real story of homelessness. Not the sanitized version. Melissa grew up in a family struggling with addiction and has been in and out of the streets since she was a kid, from Tompkins Square Park to the 1988 riots in New York City. She's been through sweep after sweep, where the city shows up with little warning and clears out everything a person owns, sometimes bulldozed, sometimes thrown straight in the garbage. Imagine starting over from nothing, again and again, through no fault of your own.
And the truth is, none of us should feel okay about that. More people are ending up on the streets every day because of the affordable housing crisis and the other forces pushing people out of homes they can no longer afford. That should upset all of us enough to want to do something about it.
We are lifting individual stories from the documentaries we have produced over the years to help people better understand how homeless people fight to survive and the true reality of homelessness.
If Melissa's story moved you, share it. Contact your local legislators and tell them homeless sweeps and a lack of affordable housing are not the answer, people need real solutions and real homes. And if you want to learn more about homeless sweeps happening in Seattle and beyond, watch our full documentary, 'Where Do They Go? The Painful Reality of Seattle's RV Homeless Sweeps.'

Who are Invisible People?
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and

activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness. However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don't take action now.

What is Homeless?
Homelessness is defined as living in housing that is below the minimum standard or lacks secure tenure. People can be categorized as homeless if they are: living on the streets (primary homelessness); moving between temporary shelters, including

houses of friends, family and emergency accommodation (secondary homelessness); living in private boarding houses without a private bathroom or security of tenure (tertiary homelessness).
