Dr. Shabir Ally addresses the question of whether religion is compatible with the theory of evolution as part of our Ramadan series, Faith and Doubt: 30 Big Questions About Belief. He explains that while some perceive a conflict between evolution and faith, this is often due to misunderstandings about both science and scripture. Science does not aim to prove or disprove God's existence but rather describes natural processes, which some interpret as excluding divine influence. Similarly, religious interpretations that reject evolution outright may stem from a rigid reading of scripture. Dr. Shabir discusses various scholarly attempts to reconcile Islamic teachings with evolution, including perspectives from Dr. Maurice Bucaille and David Solomon Jalajel. He suggests that evolution can be seen as a divinely guided process rather than a random one, with God using natural mechanisms to create and shape life, including the emergence of human beings. Adam, he proposes, may have been chosen as the first prophet from an already-existing intelligent human community, marking the point at which humans became spiritually accountable. In this way, he argues, religion and science need not be in conflict but can be harmonized.
