Dr. Shabir Ally unpacks the often misunderstood Quranic verse about the Prophet Muhammad’s night journey and ascension (17:1), highlighting thelinguistic shifts in the verse that suggest a subtle dialogue between the speaker and God. He explains that some early Muslims viewed the journey as a spiritual vision rather than a physical one, noting that the Quran itself does not explicitly say the Prophet’s body was transported. The term 'abd' (servant) used in the verse, he argues, does not necessarily imply a bodily journey, as it can refer to the soul as well. While many Muslims accept the journey as a miraculous physical event, others, seeking a rational explanation, interpret it as a visionary experience. Dr. Shabir emphasizes that both views are valid within the tradition, and cautions against relying solely on later biographical literature to interpret the Quran.

Who is Shabir Ally?Shabir Ally is a Canadian Muslim preacher who serves as the president of the Islamic Information & Dawah Centre International in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Ally is known for promoting a contextual interpretation of the Quranic verses, but seeks to find their justification in similar expressions within the Christian Bible. He has debated William Lane Craig, David Wood, Nabeel Qureshi, Michael Licona and John Dominic Crossan. He has also debated apologists James White and Jay Smith.
What is Isra-Miraj?The Isra and Miraj are the two parts of a 'Night Journey' that Muslims believe Muhammad took during a single night around the year 621 CE. It has been described as both a physical and spiritual journey. A brief sketch of the story is in chapter Al-Isra of the Quran. In the Night Journey, Muhammad travelled on the steed Buraq to "the farthest mosque". Traditionally, later Muslims identified the mosque as a location in the physical world, the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. At the mosque, Muhammad led other prophets in prayer. He then ascended to the heavens in the Miraj.
