Jesus was the Prophet coming into the world (see Deut 18:15-19). The Word of his God came to him at the Jordan when the Spirit came down out of heaven upon him. This is when the Bread of Life descended out of heaven (more precisely when the bread began to descend out of heaven). The Word of God is the Bread of Life (Matthew 4:4). We eat this bread of God, the Word of God, by doing it. Jesus consumed that Bread by doing the will of His Father and he did it perfectly. That Word became flesh because that flesh obeyed and did the Father's Word. In this way, he became the embodiment of God's word which descended out of heaven. That flesh named Jesus became the Word and the Word became that flesh named Jesus. This happened because he conformed to that Word and become one with it by consuming this Word in doing the Father's will. Jesus was the Father's Bread of Life because he embodied the Father's Word in all he said and did; the Word became flesh in this way.

In John 6, we are being told by Jesus what we must do to have eternal life. Because that flesh became the embodiment of the Word of the Father, to eat this flesh is to be conformed to the image of Christ (Rom 8:29) and that is what we are all called to do by walking in his footsteps, being led by the Spirit just as he was to be conformed to our Father's Word, the Bread of life, the will of the Father. This is how we are born from above and are sons of our Father in heaven. Our food for eternal life is doing the will of the Father and that is what Jesus had become; the Word had become that flesh named Jesus because he embodied that Word which descended upon him. We who are led by the Spirit are the body of Christ. Jesus was the Father's Bread of Life because he embodied the Father's Word in all he said and did; the Word became flesh in this way. This is how we put faith in Jesus, by walking his way which is the way to eternal life.
