The early Zionist leaders created the state of Israel with the goal of eradicating religion and transforming "Jews" into Israeli nationalists. Until very recently Hareidi (ultra-orthodox) Jews were exempt from mandatory service. They were able to remain true to their faith and traditions without fear of legal repercussions.
Recently that has changed. In 2014 the law exempting Hareidi Jews expired and was not renewed. Even though the IDF had a surplus of soldiers they decided that it was time to call the Orthodox to duty thus finally taking advantage of the opportunity to transform them from from "Jews" to "Israelis".
The Hareidi community has staged a number of peaceful protests and the Israeli police has responded with violence. Young men are being pulled from their beds in the middle of the night and thrown into military detention centers.
We will continue to assert our right to be conscientious objectors according to Article 18 of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. We will not give up our faith to serve in your military. We will not offer up our children's lives on the alter of Zionism. We will protest until the end for our rights as Jews and human beings.
