Both Jesus and Paul were charged with blasphemy against Judaism by the Sanhedrin, the ruling body of Judaism. But the Sanhedrin only had authority over Jewish affairs. They could only indict Jews for blasphemy. If Jesus and Paul had defected from Judaism and intended to start a new religion, as many maintain, why didn't they say that when they were facing execution? "Sanhedrin: I'm not a Jew any longer. I am now a Christian. Therefore, you have no authority over me, anymore than you can indict adherents to any other religion for blasphemy." But neither Jesus nor Paul invoked that defense, nor is it discussed or even hinted at in the New Testament. Why? The answer is obvious. Because in their minds both Jesus and Paul were dedicated Jews.
