Agree – or face the consequences.
That’s the warning to Hamas following the announcement of a new Gaza peace plan. Israel says it’s on board. The White House has called it historic, and if it ends the war, perhaps it will be.
It was a typically superlative-laden address from the US President, announcing his peace proposal for Gaza. He called it “a big, big day. A beautiful day, potentially one of the great days ever in civilization.”
Adding: “Some think it’s the biggest thing they’ve ever heard.”
And it might still be, if the plan is enacted correctly and the war ends.
However, this US-Israeli plan was announced to the press before Hamas negotiators had even seen a copy of it – let alone signed on, meaning there’s no guarantee they would say yes.
According to some regional analysts, it’s less of a roadmap and more of a rough sketch.
Of particular concern is the “day after” plan, which envisages Palestinians handing over control of Gaza to an international body – led by President Trump and including former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Coming up we’ll debate:
Whether this is really a historic plan that can end the war and deliver long-term peace
If Hamas have no choice but to accept the deal
And if the “day after” plan is a colonial imposition or a pathway to a Palestinian state
