Timeline of revelation of the Quran

Quran history refers to the oral revelation of the Quran to prophet Muhammad and its subsequent written compilation into a manuscript.

Quran revelations began in 610 AD when the Angel Gabriel appeared to Muhammad in a cave Hira, near Mecca, reciting to him a portion of the Quran. Muhammad continued to receive revelations throughout his life, up until his death in 632 AD.

After a chapter was revealed, Muhammad summoned his scribes, and dictated what he had heard, and instructed them where to position the verses in relation to other verses and chapters. Therefore, the final chronology, or order of the Quran was set by Muhammad during his lifetime under God's directions.

    1. The Quran Timeline uses extrapolated data, and it's nothing but a calculated 'guess'. The chronology, or order is based on the widely agreed revelation order of the Quran, and not the Nöldeke chronology which is presented for reference only.

    2. The calculations are based on calculating the total words in the Quran, and dividing by the number of Days, in the Meccan and Medinan periods. This average rate of transmission is used to calculate the average number of days (Period) the Quran chapter may have been revealed over.

    3. The word count includes all verses, even those revealed in different periods. i.e. a Meccan chapter with Medinan verse. As these are small in number and make minimal impact on the overall data.

    4. The timeline presents a viable, visual scenario of the timing of revelation. The timeline is not intended as an accurate or precise presentation of history. All calculations are based on assumptions and estimates which are elaborated further below.
