Abraham takes Hagar as a second-wife, at the request of Sarah in order to have a child. Shortly after, Hagar conceives Ishmael. The Bible claims Sarah is dispised by the pregnant Hagar, and in turn she deals harshly with her. Hagar is abused by Sarah and flees into the wilderness (Shur). | |
1 Hagar escapes to Shur (Arabia) |
|
But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thine hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.
And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water [Hagar's Well] in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. |
Hagar flees her residence in Beersheba (south Palestine) and heads into the desert to escape the wrath of Sarai. The angel find Hagar by the fountain by Shur. CHRISTIANITY - According to the Bible, Shur is a desert area in Egypt.
JUDAISM - According to Jewish Torah, Shur is identified as a 'fountain in the road to Shur' between Kadesh and Bered. All these locations point to the Sinai desert, near the Egyptian border.
JUDAISM - According to Jewish Scholarship:

Genesis Rabbah 60:16, Pirkei de-Rabbi Eliezer

And all the kings of Zimri [Zimram], and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes On Zimran: Possibly Knobel is right in connecting it with Zabram of Ptolemy (VI.vii.5), West of Mecca, on the Red Sea. We may perhaps compare also ZIMRI of JER 25:25. The name is derived from zemer, 'mountain-sheep or -goat,' this animal having doubtless been the totem of the clan. Hastings' Dictionary (p. 982) |

The sons of Jokshan: Sheba and Dedan | Surah 11:95 in the Qur'an says that one of the sons, Midian, was "removed from sight" – perhaps until these Last Days. Midian was the most notable son, in that his descendants are mentioned more often in the Bible, the Qur'an and in secular records than any of his brothers' descendants. Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah - blessed and a guidance for the worlds. In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. And [mention] when We made the House a place of return for the people and [a place of] security. And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer. And We charged Abraham and Ishmael, [saying], "Purify My House for those who perform Tawaf [move around] and those who are staying [there] for worship and those who bow and prostrate [in prayer]."
And [mention] when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this a secure city [Mecca] and provide its people with fruits - whoever of them believes in Allah and the Last Day." [ Allah ] said. "And whoever disbelieves - I will grant him enjoyment for a little; then I will force him to the punishment of the Fire, and wretched is the destination." |

The purification required the removal of the many Gods, idols and pagan statues that were worshipped by the Arabs of the time. A sanctuary where monotheists (Muslims) could bow, prostrate, circumumbulate (walk around in a circular motion) and worship God. |

The Greek historian Diodorus Siculus is believed to have mentioned the Kaabah in 60-30 BC while describing the coast of Jeddah and its surrounding areas mentioned: The inhabitants of the land about the gulf, who are known as Banizomenes, find their food by hunting the land animals and eating their meat. And a temple has been set up there, which is very holy and exceedingly revered by all Arabians. Diodorus Siculus, Bibliotheca Historica, Book 3 Chapter 44 Edward Gibbon suggested that the Kaaba was mentioned by ancient Greek writer, Diodorus Siculus, before the Christian era: The genuine antiquity of Caaba ascends beyond the Christian era: in describing the coast of the Red sea the Greek historian Diodorus has remarked, between the Thamudites and the Sabeans, a famous temple, whose superior sanctity was revered by all the Arabians; the linen or silken veil, which is annually renewed by the Turkish emperor, was first offered by the Homerites, who reigned seven hundred years before the time of Mohammad.
