Bible vs Codex

manuscript2

Over 5,800 manuscripts, when pieced together create the New Testament Bible we have in our hands today.

The New Testament has more manuscripts than any other ancient work. There are over 5,800 complete or fragmented Greek manuscripts, 10,000 Latin manuscripts and 9,300 manuscripts in ancient languages, such as Syriac, Slavic, Gothic, Ethiopic, Coptic and Armenian.

Bart Ehrman
They all contain mistakes

"Most of the [Bible] manuscripts are many centuries removed from the originals, and none of them perfectly accurate. They all contain mistakes - altogether many thousands of mistakes". New Testament: An Historical Introduction to Early Christian Writings. Bart Ehrman p.449

The table below lists the primary Bible manuscripts and their features.

Sinaiticus King James (KJV)
330-350 AD
Discovered in 1234 by Constantin von Tischendorf, a German evolutionist theologian, at St. Catherine's Monastery at Mount Sinai.

  • Codex Sinaiticus

    Mark 1:1
    The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;
In Sinaiticus, the words 'the Son of God' are missing.   biblegateway.com
  • KJV translators felt the need to emphasize Jesus, as the Son of God?
  • Mark 1:1 (KJV)
    The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;
    Mark 1:41
Jesus, angry, stretched out his hand and touched him…
In Sinaiticus, Jesus is said to be angry. In KJV, the anger was replaced with compassion.   biblegateway.com
  • An angry Jesus could be viewed as a negative
  • A compassion-filled Jesus would be positive
  • Mark 1:41 (KJV)
And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean
    Mark 16:9-20
    Jesus' Resurrection

In Sinaiticus, Jesus' resurrection (verses 9–20) are missing.   biblegateway.com
  • How did the early Jewish-Christians view Jesus' resurrection event?
  • Was Jesus' resurrection a later theological addition?
  • Mark 16:9-20 (KJV)
    Jesus' Resurrection
Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not. After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country. And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them. Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
    Matthew 6:9-13 Father,
    Hallowed be thy name,
    Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, as in heaven, so upon earth.
Give us day by day our daily bread
And forgive us our sins, as we ourselves also forgive every one that is indebted to us.
And bring us not into temptation.
In Sinaiticus, the text is very different to the KJV   biblicalarchaeology.org
    Matthew 6:9-13
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
    Matthew 24:36
But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, neither the Son, but the Father only
In Sinaiticus, only the Father knows of the hour, the Son is denied knowledge which presents a dilemma. For theological reasons, the words 'neither the Son' are removed.   biblicalarchaeology.org
    Matthew 24:36
But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, neither the Son, but the Father only
    John 8:3-11
    Woman caught in adultery
In Sinaiticus, the entire 9 verses are missing.   biblicalarchaeology.org
  • Why did the KJV translators add the story of an adulterous woman into the Bible?
  • Possibly to show the importance of forgiveness exemplified through Jesus' actions?
  • John 8:3-11
    Woman caught in adultery
And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
    John 7:53-8:11
    [This is missing
The earliest manuscripts and many other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53-8:11.
A few manuscripts include these verses, wholly or in part, after John 7:36, John 21:25, Luke 21:38 or Luke 24:53.]   biblegateway.com
    John 7:53-8:11
And every man went unto his own house. Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
    1 John 5:7
Spurious Trinitarian addition at 1 John 5:7. thus proving that the addition at 1 John 5:7 is indeed a corruption of the Bible text.
Not in the oldest Greek manuscripts
    Not in the Peshitta
    1 John 5:7
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
    Luke 9:55-56
In Sinaiticus, the entire 2 verses are missing.   biblicalarchaeology.org
    Luke 9:55-56
"But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village."
    Luke 24:51
"And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven."
      biblicalarchaeology.org
In Sinaiticus, the words 'carried up into heaven' are missing. Leaving no ascension in the Gospels has theological implications is the reference to Jesus' ascension
    Luke 24:51
"And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven."

    Vatanicus King James (KJV)
  • Codex Vaticanus
  • Greek manuscript
  • Old Testament (complete)
  • New Testament (complete)
  • Due to Vaticanus over 36,000 changes appear in the modern Bible versions today.

This manuscript was discovered in 1481 in the Vatican library in Rome, where it is currently held.

It is written on expensive vellum, a fine parchment originally from the skin of calf or antelope.

    Manuscript P52
The oldest undisputed fragment is P52, which contains part of John 18:31-33. This fragment is dated between 125 and 160 AD. The fact that the passage comes from John is ironic, since most (not all) scholars believe John was the last of the four gospels to be written.
