Remsberg list 42 ancient writers who failed to mention Jesus Christ in their writings, even though they were alive during or close to his lifetime.
John Eleazer Remsburg (1848-1919) was an ardent religious skeptic in America. In 1909, he wrote
THE CHRIST, a book in which he meticulously identified 42 ancient writers who failed to write of Jesus or whose mentions are suspect.
It is not against the man Jesus that I write, but against the Christ Jesus of theology.
Jesus of Nazareth, the Jesus of humanity, the pathetic story of whose humble life and tragic death has awakened the sympathies of millions, is a possible character and may have existed; but the Jesus of Bethlehem, the Christ of Christianity,
is an impossible character and does not exist.
The 42 writers list became know as the
REMBSBERG LIST. This list was subsequently used by authors in similar books that questioned the historicity of Jesus, or that Christ of the gospels was a mythical figure.
