Thousands are dying every day as infections continue to soar to record levels. All of a sudden, an overwhelming sense of optimism has now turned into despair and anguish. India’s healthcare system is now buckling pressure, leaving the people without lifesaving hospital beds, oxygen and drugs. In all, nearly 270,000 people are confirmed to have died from the virus, with reported infections topping 24 million. India is staring at a human catastrophe of unimaginable proportions.

What has really gone wrong? How could the nation that seemed to have overcome the first COVID wave last year is now down on its knees? Can India face down and recover from the gravest threat ever in its history?
