Over 40 million Americans now live below the poverty line. That’s twice as many as 50 years ago. Families move from place to place, working unstable jobs that barely pay enough to survive. Homelessness, hunger, and shame are part of daily life.
In Appalachia, many people survive with the help of food stamps. In Los Angeles, homelessness is rising fast. Some neighborhoods are so poor that charities build small wooden shelters for people with no place to sleep.
