Nuh Turbasi) mausoleum complex, located within the courtyard of the Nabi Nuh Mosque in the city center of Cizre, Sirnak Province, southeastern Turkey. The square structure features external blue-and-white tilework and is capped by a distinct metal conical dome roof over the subterranean vault. Local regional tradition holds this site to be the true final burial place of the biblical and Quranic patriarch Noah, given the city's close geographic proximity to Mount Judi (Cebel-i Cudi), where the Ark is traditionally believed to have finally rested after the great deluge.

Discovered in 1959 by Turkish army captain Ilhan Durupinar, the site gained international fame after amateur archaeologist Ron Wyatt and others promoted it as the petrified remains of Noah's Ark. It sits roughly 18 miles (29 km) south of the summit of Mount Ararat. Today, the area functions as a protected national park and features a small visitor center overlooking the formation.

  • FAQ on Turkey (7)

1.Is the Star and Crescent a symbol of Islam?

The crescent is not a symbol of Islam, but of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans are those tribes that moved to Turkey from east and middle Asia. They converted to Islam and built a huge Muslim Empire that ruled the whole Muslim world for centuries. When they took Islam as a religion they started using the lunar calendar, the calendar that was used by Muslims, Jews and early Christians. Even today, the flag of Turkey has a crescent on it. There was no crescent on any mosque built before the Ottomans era.

2.How is Terah, Abrahams father connected to Iraq?

Ur of the Chaldeans (Ur Kasdim) was Terah's original homeland where he raised his family, including his sons Abram (Abraham), Nahor, and Haran. Most scholars identify this as the ancient Sumerian city-state of Ur in modern-day southern Iraq (though some scholars place it in northern Mesopotamia near modern-day southeastern Turkey).

3.How is Terah, Abrahams father connected to Turkey?

Haran is located in southeastern Turkey (near the Syrian border) along the upper Euphrates River. Terah set out from Ur with his family toward the land of Canaan, but they stopped and settled in Haran (Harran). Terah lived out the remainder of his life in modern-day Turkey and died in Haran at the age of 205.

4.Where did Noahs Ark come to rest after the Great Flood?

After months at sea, the floodwaters receded and the Ark came to rest upon a mountain peak. The Hebrew Bible identifies this location as the Mountains of Ararat (in modern-day eastern Turkey), while the Quran specifies Mount Judi (located in the same region near the Turkish-Iraqi border).

5.Why did Terah leave Ur, and where did he travel?

Following the divine call given to Abraham and the conflict with local idol worshipers, Terah gathered his family including Abraham, Sarah, and Lot and left Ur of the Chaldees to journey toward the land of Canaan. However, upon reaching the northern trade hub of Haran (in modern-day Turkey), the family settled there temporarily.
