Terah was an influential patriarch, a royal official, and the biological father of the prophet Abraham.

Born around 2126 BC in the ancient Mesopotamian city of Ur (modern-day Iraq), he lived during the tyrannical reign of King Nimrod. Terah was a high-ranking citizen and a master craftsman who specialized in carving and selling pagan idols, which the entire society worshipped. He faced an immense family crisis when his son Abraham began publicly destroying these idols and preaching monotheism, leading to Abraham being thrown into a fiery furnace. Despite witnessing his son's miraculous survival, Terah struggled to leave his old traditions behind, though he eventually migrated with Abraham toward Canaan. Terah lived to 205 years old and died around 1921 BC in the city of Haran.

Prophet Terah in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam

Judaism

Viewed in the biblical narrative as the father of Abraham, rabbinic traditions depict him negatively as an idol-maker or idolater from Ur who underwent a spiritual failing.

Christianity

Mentioned in the New Testament in the ancestral lineage of Jesus, he is historically viewed as the patriarch who began the migration of God's chosen people from Ur.

Islam

He is remembered as the father of Abraham who made idols and opposed his son's monotheistic teachings.
“ The father of Abraham who led his family out of Ur. He halted in Haran, dying just short of Canaan's promise. ”

Describe the World and Society Terah Came Into

The Environment
The sophisticated, hyper-urbanized, and densely populated imperial cities of ancient Mesopotamia, specifically Ur of the Chaldeans and later the trading outpost of Harran.
The Society
A powerful, highly educated, and advanced Bronze Age civilization dominated by complex administrative hierarchies and extensive commercial trade networks.
The Social Climate
Thoroughly saturated with state-sponsored polytheism, astrology, and pagan idol manufacturing (a lucrative family business Terah ran, according to biblical and Islamic traditions), making any divergence into ethical monotheism a socially dangerous act of treason.
“ Initiate the painful but necessary journey away from familiar, idolatrous cultures, serving as the essential biological stepping stone for the next generation's covenantal breakthrough. ”

Why Did God Send Terah?

1. To initiate the physical migration toward the Promised Land
Terah was placed in history to physically uproot his family from Ur of the Chaldeans and lead them northwest to Haran, initiating the geographical transition that positioned Abraham to receive his ultimate call from God.

GENESIS 11:31

2. To demonstrate the barrier of systemic idolatry over family bonds
Terah's life serves as a stark moral warning; despite witnessing the profound monotheistic testimony and protection of his son, he chose to remain devoted to carving and worshipping man-made false gods.

JOSHUA 24:2

QURAN 6:74
