Prophet Shem

Shem is one of Noah's three sons, along with Japheth and Ham.

He is a survivior of the great flood. Among Shem's descendants are the Arabs and the Hebrews, and he was the forefather of all the subsequent prophets.

Jewish tradition regarded Shem as the greatest, but youngest son of Noah, who was born circumcised and served as a prophet for 400 years.

Muslim tradition believes that Shem was given the 'middle of the earth' as his land, and he went on to become the father of the Arabs, Persians and Byzantines.

Shem in the Torah

Torah is the first 5 books* of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
1 And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
2 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
3 In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;
4 And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan.
5 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness.
6 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.
7 God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.
8 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.
9 Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born.
10 The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram.
11 These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations.
12 These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood:
13 And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
