At the centre of an ecstatic throng a nine year-old girl is paraded through the streets. Until she reaches puberty this little girl will bless the devoted. It’s hard for her family, but they have faith in the priests who identified her as an incarnation of the Kumari goddess when she was just three. “Since my daughter is a God I know we shouldn’t miss her, but we do. She doesn’t think about us much… when I see her she just says hello and leaves.” The roots of the tradition are less than holy: the result of 18th-century kings devoting young girls to God in atonement for their abuse of children. The age limit is troubling too; after all, what does a Goddess do when she’s no longer revered? Meeting a teenage Kumari we find her cleaning – she has no other employable skills.

Who is the Hindu God?

Hindu deities are the gods and goddesses in Hinduism. The terms and epithets for deity within the diverse traditions of Hinduism vary, and include Deva, Devi, Ishvara, Bhagavan and Bhagavati. The deities of Hinduism have evolved from the Vedic era (2nd millennium BCE) through the medieval era (1st millennium CE), regionally within Nepal, India and in southeast Asia, and across Hinduism's diverse traditions. Illustrations of major deities include Vishnu, Sri (Lakshmi), Shiva, Sati, Brahma and Saraswati.

What is Buddhist?

Buddhism is the world's fourth-largest religion with over 520 million followers, or over 7% of the global population, known as Buddhists. An Indian religion, Buddhism encompasses a variety of traditions, beliefs and spiritual practices largely based on original teachings attributed to the Buddha and resulting interpreted philosophies. Buddhism originated in Ancient India as a Sramana tradition sometime between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE, spreading through much of Asia. All Buddhist traditions share the goal of overcoming suffering and the cycle of death & rebirth, either by the attainment of Nirvana or through the path of Buddhahood.
