The Midianite Punitive Expedition (approx. 1406 BC) - Phinehas vs Midianites - Unknown deaths
Phinehas (Pinchas) was a High Priest of Israel, grandson of Aaron, and grandnephew of Moses. Known for his intense zeal and religious devotion, he served as a key leader during the Israelites' journey through the wilderness and their entry into Canaan.
In the Book of Numbers (Chapter 25), when the Israelites began worshiping Baal of Peor and engaging in widespread immorality, a severe plague struck the camp. Phinehas intervened decisively to stop the sin and appease divine wrath, immediately halting the plague that had already killed 24,000 people.
In reward for his zeal and commitment to preserving the spiritual purity of the community, God granted Phinehas a 'Covenant of Peace' (Brit Shalom) and guaranteed a perpetual priesthood to him and his direct descendants.
Beyond his priestly duties, Phinehas served as a trusted leader in times of conflict. He accompanied the Israelite army into battle against Midian, led diplomatic delegations to avert civil war among the tribes near the Jordan River, and guarded the Ark of the Covenant during the era of the Judges.
Judaism: Revered as a legendary High Priest, hero of righteous indignation, and central figure of an entire weekly Torah portion (Pinchas). Rabbinic tradition frequently associates his zealous spirit with the Prophet Elijah.
Christianity: Honored as a faithful leader whose decisive actions demonstrated the power of intercession and faith under the Old Covenant.
Islam: Recognized through classical historical and scriptural commentaries as a noble figure from the priestly line of Harun (Aaron) who helped preserve monotheistic guidance among the Children of Israel.
