Refuting David Wood’s Claim That Prophet Muhammad Was “White” and Why Skin Color Isn’t a Basis for Islam
https://cledwards1.substack.com/p/david-wood-and-the-color-of-prophet
The script responds to Christian apologist David Wood’s claim that Prophet Muhammad was a “white man” and his implication that Black people should not be Muslim. It argues that sahih hadith describe the Prophet as abyad, commonly translated as “white,” but explains that abyad in Arabic is a descriptive term with a range closer to “swarthy” and distinct from being stark white (al-amhak), and it is not a racial category. The speaker contrasts this with descriptions of Ali ibn Abi Talib as very black-skinned in Tarikh al-Islam and Tarikh al-Khulafa, citing Mustafa Briggs’ Beyond Bilal. The script criticizes Eurocentric assumptions and links modern racial categories to Enlightenment-era scientific racism, then cites Qur’an 49:13 to emphasize righteousness, not skin color, as the basis of nobility.

What is a Black Man?Dark skin is a naturally occurring human skin color that is rich in eumelanin pigments and having a dark color. People with relatively dark skin are referred to as brown, and those with very dark skin are often referred to as black, although this usage can be ambiguous in some countries where it is also used to specifically refer to different ethnic groups or populations. The evolution of dark skin is believed to have begun around 1.2 million years ago in light-skinned early hominid species after they moved from the equatorial rainforest to the sunny savannas. In the heat of the savannas, better cooling mechanisms were required, which were achieved through the loss of body hair and development of more efficient perspiration.
