Exodus 6:2-3 explicitly states that God appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob by the name God Almighty but was not known to them by His name Yahweh, whereas Genesis repeatedly depicts Abraham addressing and invoking God by the name Yahweh. Scholars attribute this to differing documentary sources (such as the Yahwist and Priestly traditions) which held different views on when divine names were first revealed to humanity.
