Why so many Christian denominations?

Only the Catholic Church existed in the years following Jesus' Crucifixion

Today, all Christian churches originate from the Catholic church. Whilst the majority of the 38,000 Christian denominations stem from the Protestant doctrine, established in 1054 AD, in direct opposition to Catholic teachings.
